SGL BBL stands for Superficial Gluteal Lipofilling, a safer, modified version of the traditional Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL). Unlike a standard BBL, where fat might be injected deep into or under the muscle (carrying a high risk of fatal fat embolism), SGL involves injecting fat exclusively into the superficial subcutaneous layer above the muscle fascia under ultrasound guidance.
Wood MediSpa has hosted specialist training for surgeons to master this and other advanced techniques. We believe that the best way to maintain clinical excellence is to learn from surgeons leading in their specialism. Our surgeons frequently travel abroad to visit peers and attend global meetings, ensuring they bring recent international developments back to their practice in Devon. We also host Masterclass Training sessions for surgeons.
Wood MediSpa hosted the first SAFE BBL Training course. This BAAPS-approved (British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons) masterclass for GMC-registered plastic surgeons detailed the SAFE technique (Separation, Aspiration, and Fat Equalisation) using real-time ultrasound guidance to ensure fat is only placed in the safe, superficial plane. Wood MediSpa’s commitment to continuous training and development directly elevates the patient experience through keeping our surgeons at the ‘cutting edge’ of the industry.
Is BBL dangerous?
In the media, BBL is presented as a dangerous procedure with only aesthetic benefits. At Wood MediSpa, this is not the case. Any surgery has inherent risks, but the biggest risk with traditional BBL are fatal fat embolisms. When SGL or SAFE BBL is carried out under ultrasound guidance using the SAFE protocol, this procedure is approved by BAAPS as a surgery that can be performed safely.
SAFE BBL or SGL can offer several functional and physiological benefits beyond aesthetics.
1. Physical Comfort & Mobility
- Pressure Relief: For individuals with very little natural cushioning (lipoatrophy), fat grafting can provide a cushion for the sitting bones and nerves, such as the sciatic nerve.
- Alleviating Skin Irritation: In cases where BBL is part of a larger body contouring plan (common after massive weight loss), removing excess skin via liposuction and restoring volume can reduce chafing, inflammation, and fungal infections in skin folds.
- Clothing Fit: Improving body proportions can resolve functional difficulties in finding clothes that fit correctly, which often causes physical discomfort or restricted movement in poorly fitting garments.
2. Posture & Body Mechanics
- Centre of Gravity: Adding volume can create a more balanced centre of gravity, potentially reducing strain on the lower back and hips.
- Post-Weight Loss Restoration: For post-bariatric patients, BBL helps restore the lost structural volume of the buttocks, which can improve overall body alignment and physical functioning.
3. Metabolic & “Dual” Benefits
- Targeted Fat Reduction: Because BBL requires liposuction from donor areas like the abdomen or thighs, patients receive the functional benefit of reduced fat in those specific regions.
- Natural Integration: Unlike synthetic implants, transferred fat behaves like natural tissue, meaning it moves, feels, and ages naturally with your body without the risk of implant rupture or rejection.
4. Psychological & Social Functioning
Clinical research indicates that successful body contouring significantly impacts daily life quality:
- Social Confidence: Studies show significant improvement in social confidence and reduced anxiety in social or professional settings within six months.
- Mental Wellness: Patients often report a transformative boost in self-esteem and a reduction in depressive symptoms once their physical appearance aligns with their internal self-image.
