We understand that a hernia can be more than just a physical discomfort; it can limit your daily activities and cause persistent worry. Our specialist team, led by highly experienced Consultant General Surgeons, provides precision hernia repair within the tranquil, private setting of our Devon estate. Whether you are seeking treatment for the first time or a recurring issue, we prioritise a seamless journey from diagnosis to a rapid, comfortable recovery.
A hernia occurs when an internal part of the body, typically a loop of fatty tissue or a piece of the intestine, pushes through a weakness in the surrounding muscle or tissue wall. While hernias are not always immediately dangerous, they do not improve on their own and will likely increase in size and discomfort over time.
Hernia repair can be combined with other surgical procedures such as abdominoplasty and post-weightloss body recontouring surgery.
Common Types of Hernia Treated:
- Inguinal Hernia: The most common type, appearing as a lump in the groin.
- Femoral Hernia: Similar to an inguinal hernia but located slightly lower in the groin; these often require more urgent repair.
- Umbilical & Paraumbilical Hernia: A bulge occurring at or near the belly button.
- Incisional Hernia: Occurs at the site of a previous surgical scar where the abdominal wall has weakened.
Surgery is the only definitive way to repair a hernia. At Wood MediSpa, our procedures are typically performed as day-case surgery under either local or general anaesthetic, allowing you to return home the same day.
The “Tension-Free” Technique
Our surgeons primarily utilise tension-free repair methods. This involves:
- Reduction: Gently pushing the protruding tissue back into its correct place in the abdominal cavity.
- Reinforcement: Instead of simply stitching the hole closed (which can pull the tissue tight), a specialised synthetic mesh is placed over the weak spot.
- Support: This mesh acts as a scaffold, allowing your own tissue to grow into it, creating a strong, permanent reinforcement that significantly reduces the risk of the hernia returning.
The Recovery Journey
Most patients find that recovery from hernia surgery is relatively quick, particularly with modern surgical techniques.
- Immediate Post-Op: It is normal to experience some bruising, swelling, and mild discomfort around the incision site for the first few days.
- Activities: You should be able to resume light activities, such as short walks and desk-based work, within 1 to 2 weeks.
- Physical Restrictions: To ensure the mesh integrates properly, you should avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise (including gym workouts or sit-ups) for at least 4 to 6 weeks.
- Driving: You can usually return to driving once you can perform an emergency stop comfortably and safely, typically after 7 to 14 days.
