Dr Toby Nelson

Consultant Dermatologist and Mohs Micrographic Surgeon

Toby qualified from Guys, Kings and St Thomas’ School of Medicine in 2007 with first class honours. He served as a Medical Officer in the British Army for nine years. Toby gained membership to the Royal College of Physicians in 2012 becoming a Consultant Dermatologist in 2017. Toby successfully completed an internationally acclaimed fellowship in Mohs micrographic surgery and cutaneous oncology in New Zealand under the tutorage of Dr Paul Salmon and Neil Mortimer, gaining membership to the prestigious American college of Mohs Surgery (ACMS). Toby is one of only a handful of dermatologists in the UK and Europe with this accreditation. Toby has a keen interest in many dermatological conditions including acne and hair loss (men and women).


Toby has published his research widely and presented at international conferences. He continues to be involved in research.


Toby leads the Mohs micrographic service in the University Hospital Plymouth NHS Trust training registrars and other consultants in Mohs surgery and procedural dermatology. His fastidious attention to detail, extensive knowledge and training ensures he delivers the best possible cosmetic outcome following any dermatological surgery.


Outside of medicine, Toby’s young family keeps him busy. At weekends, he and his wife Sarah can usually be found enjoying the great outdoors with their three children and Springer Spaniel.


Toby’s expertise, exacting standards and holistic care has earnt him the reputation among his peers and patient’s as one of the best dermatological surgeons in the UK.
