For many women considering breast surgery options, their priority is to achieve a confidence boosting beautiful, natural, and youthful breast shape. Pregnancy, weight gain and loss, genetics, or advancing age can predispose to loss of breast volume, projection and position. A mastopexy procedure helps to restore a more youthful, perky, attractive shape to the breasts and re-proportions and rebalances the breasts.

I am extremely pleased with my breast reduction and uplift. The experience at the hospital was first class the staff are friendly, professional, caring and kind. And the building and grounds are beautiful. The aftercare has also been excellent. I am a natural worrier but all of my questions and concerns, both pre op and post op have been dealt with quickly, efficiently and with kindness. Thank you. I would definitely recommend putting your trust in the Wood MediSpa

Wood MediSpa Patient

If your concern lies in oversized, heavy and uncomfortable breasts and you are considering a reduction, an uplift is performed as part of almost every breast reduction. Some women experienced severe physical discomfort or psychological distress from hypertrophic and/or misshapen breasts. Hypertrophic breasts, where a patient has excessive breast tissue, can cause life-affecting physical symptoms like back pain, neck pain, headaches, and skin rashes,

If your concern lies in reconstructing a natural perky breast shape and you are worried about whether your breast has enough volume, it is possible to add volume to the breast as part of the mastopexy procedure. This is particularly beneficial for the restoration of volume of the breast in the upper pole (the region above the nipple) that tends to deflate postpartum (post partum atrophy) or after significant weightloss (post weightloss atrophy). Breast mastopexy can be combined with a breast augmentation to simultaneously place implants to restore volume, shape and balance. Please also visit our page on breast asymmetry if this is concern.

At your in-depth consultation with your surgeon, you’ll share your goals and desired outcome. After careful examination, your surgeon can advise what breast lift technical approach is best suited to your anatomy to achieve the outcome you seek. In some cases, your surgeon may advise a staged approach as the safest approach for your surgery.

Every individual is different and it’s important for us to understand your desired results. Our approach is to craft gentle feminine curves to give you the confidence you deserve. At Wood MediSpa, we always recommend the least invasive, shortest incision approach to achieve the desired results.

Breast Mastopexy at Wood MediSpa near Exeter

Breast ptosis is the medical term for sagging or drooping breasts, occurring when skin loses elasticity and ligaments weaken. This causes breast tissue and the nipple to sit lower on the chest wall. It is a natural process caused by aging, gravity, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight changes. It is diagnosed on a four point scale.

→ Glandular Ptosis Or Pseudoptosis

The breast gland droops down below the inframammary fold, but the nipple-areola is positioned above the crease

→ Grade I Ptosis – Mild

Both the gland and nipple droop slightly below the breast crease

→ Grade II Ptosis – Moderate

Gland and nipple droop more significantly below the crease

→ Grade III Ptosis – Severe

The most severe form, associated with the nipple-areola at the lowest aspect of the drooping breast

A breast lift, also known as mastopexy, removes excess skin and tightens surrounding tissue to reshape and restore the breast. This procedure is often combined with augmentation or reduction. If you do not have significant drooping of the breast, you may be a candidate for breast augmentation without uplift.

With Breast Reduction

Do you suffer from heavy breasts that cause you discomfort? A breast lift is almost always performed along with a breast reduction. More information on breast reduction can be found on our breast reduction page.

For some patients, your surgeon will recommend staged mastopexy to optimise healing and result.

More information regarding breast mastopexy surgery is available at the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons.

With Implants

At Wood MediSpa, the majority of implants we use are supplied by Nagor and PolyTech. We stock all shapes and sizes of implant and also various densities of implant. We are able to order custom sized implants where required. This no-compromise approach ensures we have the correct implant available for every patient.

At Wood MediSpa we use sub glandular (behind the breast tissue, on top of the chest muscle), sub muscular (behind the pectoral muscle, offering more coverage which may be preferred in leaner patients) and dual plane techniques.

We use single use inflatable sizers on the operative table. This enables us to check implant size in real-time to get the perfect size rather than visually estimating during the consultation.

Your surgeon will recommend the best options for you based on your individual anatomy and desired result.

With B-Lite Implants

Why is implant density important?

B-Lite® is the world’s first and only lightweight breast implant, available in both round and anatomical shapes. Why is implant density and the lighter weight of the B-Lite important? Lighter breast implant weight decreases the stress on the surrounding tissues and so decreases the risk of ptosis over time. This helps to maintain the shape of the breasts and reduces drooping that can be caused by larger implants. They exert only 50% of the stress on the lower pole of the breast of an equivalent standard silicone implant.

At 30% lighter than conventional breast implants, these implants suit patients requiring larger implants and in cases where patients have poor quality skin with reduced skin elasticity. Your surgeon will discuss if this type of implant would be beneficial in your case.

They provide a natural feel while minimizing the impact of gravity, making them ideal for active patients and maintaining breast shape. The implant achieves this by integrating borosilicate microspheres in the silicone gel filling. Borosilicate is biocompatible and has an established track record of safety and has been used for many years in other implant applications elsewhere in the body.

Custom made implants do have a delivery lead time, however if your implant size is on our comprehensive implant stock list it is available immediately and can be allocated to you ready for your surgery date – so no unnecessary delays. B-Lite implants are a more expensive option as the implant devices themselves are more expensive that a standard silicone implant, however many of our patients find that this initial higher price is a worthwhile longer term investment in their health.

With Fat Transfer

Breast augmentation with fat transfer allows subtle enhancements to your breast size by using a natural alternative to breast implants—your own fat cells. Also known as autologous fat graft breast enlargement, fat transfer breast augmentation is a unique procedure that can achieve conservative increases in breast size by collecting fat from one part of the body and transferring it directly to the breast tissue, naturally increasing breast volume.

What distinguishes our services from those of other providers is our utilization of fat storage. A natural limitation of fat transfer procedures is that fat is lost as part of the surgical and healing process. Not all transferred cells survive the transplantation process, with typically 40-50% being reabsorbed by the body within the first few months. This often means that patients need more than one fat transfer to achieve the result they desire.

We are the first UK facility to introduce cryopreservation of adipose tissue – also known as fat banking or fat storage. What does this mean for you? If you opt for breast augmentation with fat transfer, or a hybrid surgery with fat transfer and an implant, you may need more than one fat transfer. Our fat banking approach allows for a single fat harvest on the day of your original surgery. This fat is then carefully cryostored for you for a future fat transfer procedure. The harvested fat can subsequently be injected under local anaesthetic, allowing patients to undergo the procedure as a local sedation day case without the necessity for further harvesting.

This minimises the downtime and discomfort associated with multiple harvests under general anaesthetic. Depending on the individual case, either MicroAire or Vaser techniques may be employed, both demonstrating comparable viability.

Your Incisions

If you’re considering undergoing Mastopexy, one of your biggest concerns might be scarring.

Our surgeons take great care in the placement of their incisions and quality of wound closures to achieve the most discreet scar possible for your anatomy. Breast lift incision placement will vary depending upon the degree of deflation, the breast and nipple position, the elasticity of the skin, and whether or not volume will be restored concomitantly with breast implants.

The main variations of Mastopexy include:

  • Circumareolar Mastopexy – “Doughnut” breast lift with an incision around areola only
  • Circumvertical Mastopexy -“Lollipop” breast lift, or short scar breast lift, with an incision around areola and a vertical line
  • Wise-Pattern Mastopexy – “Inverted-T” breast lift, with an incision around the areola, a vertical line to the inframammary crease, and a horizontal line

As you heal, the scars gradually fade to mostly unnoticeable fine silvery lines. Examples can be seen in our Before & After photos where our patients have kindly allowed us to share their images.

Staged Breast Lift

For some patients, your surgeon will recommend staged mastopexy. You might consider having two operations to be inconvenient, but the primary reason to opt for this method is to maximize the safety and durability of your results, allowing for better healing and reduced complications in comparison to a one-stage approach.

Who would benefit from a two-stage approach? If you have significant breast ptosis, a two-stage approach might benefit you. Why two-stage?

Combining a lift (which tightens skin) and an augmentation (which stretches skin with an implant) in one operation creates high tension, which can lead to wound breakdown, infection, or issues with nipple blood supply. Some patients have anatomy and skin elasticity that makes a one-stage approach viable, but others do not.

A staged approach ensures the long-term success of the shape. The first stage (the uplift) removes excess skin and tightens the tissue, creating a stable, firm ‘pocket’ as a foundation. The second stage involves placing an implant into the pre-tightened, healed pocket. This reduces the risk of the implant causing the breast to droop again over time (a common issue known as ‘bottoming out’).
