Wood MediSpa serves as a specialist surgical and skincare centre for the entire South West region. Located near Okehampton, we are a convenient central point for patients travelling from Cornwall (via the A30), Plymouth, and Exeter/Bristol (via the M5). With access to the best of laser technology, we offer a complete suite of laser treatments. You can even combine your laser treatments with Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy to help improve healing and recovery times, track skin changes with facial skin scanning or whole body scanning.

Your laser treatments at Wood MediSpa will be carried out at the highest technical standards, with safety at the forefront of our practice.

Safety in Laser Treatment

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) does not regulate aesthetic laser service (including hair removal or basic skin rejuvenation) unless they are performed by a medical professional or used to treat a clinical condition. This lack of oversight means that many high-street practitioners legally operate powerful lasers without any mandatory central registration, specialist training or a medical background.

Without a legal minimum standard for training, a practitioner’s expertise can range from a weekend course to a multi-year degree. The absence of strict equipment standards allows for the use of unbranded, imported devices that lack the rigorous safety calibrations found in medical-grade platforms used at Wood MediSpa.

In the unfortunate event of a complication, such as a laser burn or scarring, a non-medical practitioner lacks the prescribing rights or clinical training to manage the injury effectively. The UK government is developing a national licensing scheme specifically for non-surgical aesthetic procedures. Once fully implemented, this will force practitioners to prove their competency and ensure their premises meet strict hygiene and safety standards.

At present, the safest approach is to seek treatment at a CQC-registered facility, such as Wood MediSpa. You can trust that our equipment is properly maintained and all treatments are delivered by staff who uphold the highest standards of safety. Depending on the type of laser treatment you opt for, treatment is delivered by our Consultant Plastic Surgeons or Consultant Dermatologists. Less invasive treatments are delivered by our Level 7 Advanced Medical Aesthetics Practitioner Lauren Mackintosh: this is postgraduate-level certification (equivalent to a Master’s degree) and confirms expertise in facial anatomy, advanced injection techniques, complication management, and patient care in line with JCCP standards.
